An OFW couple in Jeddah received a citation for their honesty after returning a bag with half a million pesos worth of money inside. The Filipino couple was given a Certificate of Appreciation from the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah. The couple was Roberto de Guzman and Farida de Guzman. The bag was owned by a Saudi National and it contains 40K Saudi Riyals or Php550,480.64.

According to Roberto, he and his wife were about to leave a parking lot in Jeddah when they noticed a clutch bag. His wife, Farida, got the bag and took a peek inside. It was then that they saw it contains a huge amount of money. He admitted that at first, they have thought of not returning it but then, they saw that there is an ID in the bag. They decided to return the bag to its rightful owner. He narrated that upon reaching their house, they searched the bag. He said that if the didn’t see an ID they were thinking of not returning it because they need the money.

They were able to contact the owner because of the ID they found inside. The bag’s owner was very thankful and he said that the Philippines is a great country with great people. The couple was overwhelmed after giving the bag to the owner. They felt so happy that they decided to return it. Roberto said that they were more than relieved after returning the bag.

Their anxiousness was replaced with a feeling of relief and joy because they know that the money is not theirs and the couple also know that in a way, they were able to help the Saudi National by their action. It’s easy to be tempted in situations like this especially if you’re in need but if you have principles and grew up as an honest person, you will do what is right.
